Directions
Here are directions to Rorke’s Drift Lodge if you are driving from Johannesburg (6 hours), Durban (4 hours) or the Hluhluwe / Umfolozi area (4 hours). Please note that the last stretch of the journey is a dirt road, which is better navigated with a 4×4.
Driving from Johannesburg
Option 1
Follow the route along the N3. Exit at Villiers and pass Vrede and Memel.
Option 2
- Take the N12 East to Witbank. At the Delmas turn-off, take the R50 South to Delmas, Leandra, Standerton.
- At Standerton take the R23 South to Volksrust.
- At Volksrust take the N11 to Newcastle.
- 8km past Newcastle take the R621 to Dannhauser-Hattingspruit and Dundee.
- Drive through Dundee en-route to Vryheid on the R33. After 2 km you will pass the Talana Museum on your left. Continue for about 5 km.
- Take the R68 turn-off to Nqutu-Melmoth-Ulundi and turn right.
- Travel 26 km on the R68 and look out for turn-off to Rorke’s Drift on your right, opposite the Eskom sub-station.
- Turn right onto dirt road and carry on for 7 km.
- At the T-junction, turn left towards Rorke’s Drift. Travel for 12 km into Rorke’s Drift.
- Go beyond Rorke’s Drift Museum and turn right at our sign board. Proceed straight for 4.8 km along a farm road to the lodge.
Heading from Durban
- Take the N3 North to Johannesburg.
- Take the off-ramp [230] to Ladysmith on the N11.
- Pass through Ladysmith on the N11 to Newcastle. Travel about 20km towards Elandslaagte.
- Take the R601 to Dundee via Glencoe.
- Drive through Dundee en-route to Vryheid on the R33. After 2 km you will pass the Talana Museum on your left. Continue for about 5 km.
- Take the R68 turn-off to Nqutu-Melmoth-Ulundi and turn right.
- Travel 26 km on the R68 and look out for turn-off to Rorke’s Drift on your right, opposite the Eskom sub-station.

From Hluhluwe / Umfolozi
The road between Babanango and Melmoth has bad potholes outside Melmoth for 20km. However, this still remains the best route to use.
- From Empangeni, take the R34 (R66) to Melmoth.
- Drive through Melmoth on Route R66 to Ulundi.
- After +- 4 km, take the R68 left to Babanango and Nqutu. After some 20 km, watch out for the R68 turn to the right.
- Drive past Babanango for +- 47km on the R68.
- Look out for the Isandlwana turn-off on your left. Proceed on gravel road past Isandlwana for 9km.
- Turn left onto the D30 (big tree on corner) towards Rorke’s Drift.
- After 10 km, turn left at the T-junction to Rorke’s Drift.
- Go beyond Rorke’s Drift Museum and turn right at our sign board.
- Proceed straight for 4.8 km along a farm road to the lodge.
