There are also many exciting activities you can engage in at the lodge and in the surrounding area. From historical and cultural activities to adventure, there is something to do that will appeal to all ages.

Battlefield tours
Located on the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal, Rorke’s Drift has seen some of South Africa’s most significant historic moments. Battles from the Anglo Zulu War and Anglo Boer War were fought around Rorke’s Drift from the 1800s.
On a battlefield tour, you may visit historic sites and museums. Or you may enjoy a cultural tour to a traditional Zulu settlement. Your guide may share stories of the battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Blood River and Talana. Nevertheless, your guide’s recounts of history will impart a sense of tragedy, victory and the futility of war.
Horseback safaris
Horseback safaris are an exciting way to spend a morning or an afternoon. Your guide will take you on trails across the African plains. At the same time, your guide will highlight features of the landscape and events of historic significance.
Outrides take place on horses that well-trained and responsive. First-time riders may meet the horses the day before the ride and get guidance on how to ride them.
Quad biking
A fun way to acquaint yourself with the surrounds is to go on a quad bike ride. The surrounding area has dirt roads and trails that you can tackle on quad bike. Furthermore, there are routes suitable for all levels of experience.
We provide a map of the area and you may set out and explore. You may pass Nguni cattle grazing in the veld, and even spot some of the wildlife. Riders will be required to sign an indemnity form. We are able to supply riding helmets if you do not have your own.
Watch for wildlife
More than 120 species of birds have visited our gardens at various times of the year. The Paradise Flycatcher, Scarlet Chested Sunbird, Groundscraper Thrush and many more have their home here. A family of Ground Hornbills also breeds here every year.
Watch for the herd of Kudu and Impala. Other wildlife you may spot are Blackback Jackals, Porcupine, Warthogs, Wild Pigs, Mountain Reedbuck, Common Reedbuck, Grey Duiker. In addition, you may see Serval, Spotted Gennets, African Wildcats, Lynx and even an elusive Leopard.
Visit a Zulu homestead
Opt for a day trip to a Zulu homestead for a rich cultural experience. This is a chance to get an authentic glimpse of the life of a rural Zulu family. You can then observe Zulu traditions and customs relating to food, dancing, housing and day to day living. This way of life has mostly stayed the same since Shaka ruled over the Zulu kingdom some 200 years ago.
After you are rowed across the river, your guide takes you to the traditional homestead and gives you a tour.
Enjoy our lodge
Our lodge also offers you the chance to enjoy a break… without going anywhere. Start with a lavish breakfast served on our deck overlooking the pool, and admire the views of the African hills.
After breakfast, stroll across the gardens and visit the stables. For those wanting a longer walk, put on your sunglasses and follow a trail through the bushveld. Later, cool down with a dip in our pool, or swim a few laps if you’re feeling energetic. To enjoy some ‘me-time’, settle on a sun lounger at the pool with a good book. If you’d like afternoon tea in a romantic bushveld setting, we can arrange this on request.
As evening approaches, light a fire in the braai outside your chalet and cook up a feast. View the myriad stars in the sky and listen for the calls of nocturnal animals. Enjoy a good night’s sleep in your chalet.
